Travel Simultaneously to the Past, Present, and Future.  Historic Preservation.

The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, (GVSHP), www.gvshp.org, New York City’s largest neighborhood historic preservation organization, has a most impressive record, e.g., the landmark designation of the Meatpacking District, etc.  How does GVSHP and their Executive Director, Andrew Berman, aberman@gvshp.org, battle and continue to battle, with great success, the numerous and ever growing powers-that-be, universities, e.g., New York University, and real estate developers, e.g., Donald Trump?

What is the future of Historic Preservation?  How has preservation changed and how is it changing?  What are the causes for the changes? Join us for a broad discussion on preservation on various and numerous levels, the public sectors, (federal, state, city), the private sectors, special interest groups, the local sectors, e.g., community groups, and the non-profit sectors.  Historic Preservation vs. non-Historic Preservation, or cute and updated, e.g., Preservation a la Disney.  What about Preservation in other states and countries?  What are their differences and similarities?

Our guest, Andrew Berman, a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, was the Chief of Staff for New York State Senator Tom Duane, prior to becoming GVSHP’s Executive Director.  Some of GVSHP’s and Andrew’s accomplishments include, in addition to the landmark designation of the Meatpacking District, the first extension of the Greenwich Village Historic District since 1969, and community-friendly downzonings in the Far West Village and East Village.

During Andrew’s tenure as Executive Director, GVSHP has proposed a South Village Historic District, a 750-building district reflecting the extraordinary immigrant legacy, working-class architecture, and counter-cultural history of the non-landmarked area south of Washington Square Park.

Andrew was named one of the 100 Most Influential New Yorkers by New York Magazine and one of the 100 Most Powerful People in New York Real Estate by The New York Observer.  During his tenure, the GVSHP was awarded the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award by the Preservation League of New York State and the Lucy Moses Organizational Excellence Award by the New York Landmarks Conservancy, and was named “Best of NYC” by The Village Voice.

Mr. Andrew Berman may be reached at aberman@gvshp.org
