Ok Boys and Girls!!!
I am very proud and excited to have Mr. Raun Kaufman on the show today!! Raun K. Kaufman is an international speaker, writer and teacher for The Son-Rise Program® at the Autism Treatment Center of America™. In his work with families, children, and professionals from around the world, Mr. Kaufman brings a distinctive qualification to the realm of Autism treatment—his own personal history. At 18 months, Raun was diagnosed as severely and incurably autistic.

This was one of the first talks I attended and I left in amazement, this is a program that I respect and believe in.  They are a world wide program and is available in over 15 languages.

Tell your friends, your neighbors and random strangers on the street, this will be a life changing moment;)

Hello!
Continuing along with Autism Awareness Month, I have two guests that have amazing programs for your children.
Joanna Verdone, an Occupational Therapist will be joining me in the studio. She is the owner of Sensory Solutions, Inc. located in Staten Island. She will be describing how her program works and how it helps children with sensory processing disorders as well as adults with post-traumatic stress disorders.  The technology used works with the child’s brain deeply to fix and change certain behaviors that cannot be worked with cognitively.

Calling in will be Caroline Sanders of Heeling Autism. Being a dog lover, I’m really excited to hear how her program, of setting up children with Autism with their very own trained dog.  The benefits of this are endless, a child will learn responsibility, gain self-esteem, and social skills that they might never have before. A super amazing part of this program is that its FREE, they are a non-profit organization connected with Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

Aloha!
Are you aware it’s Autism Awareness month???
This month is the beginning of having amazing guests sharing their information…
Today I will be speaking with Kevin Bailey and Elizabeth Shearer of Anthony Cares for Kids.  They are a non-profit group
that is currently focusing on Autism and Bullying.  They are having a gala this April to support this cause.
Their ultimate goal is to create a safe and creative center for children.  They want to cure daily heartaches, headaches, frustrations and fears that many children face every day in their real world. www.anthonycares4kids.org

The second guest is Bricklin from the Horse Boy Foundation.  Their mission is to bring special needs (mainly kids on the autism spectrum) children and ‘neuro-typical’ (ie ‘normal’) children together, using the horse as a social nexus. They have no specific program – each child is catered to according to their own needs.  They are having a FREE program in NY this Friday April 9th.

Get outside and enjoy the weather!

Aloha!
My favorite activity…Socializing!  Today I discussed the importance of having a social child.  Play dates, family functions and successful communication with peers.  I discus the importance of helping your child have a successful day while interacting with others in a way that everyone is comfortable with.  Modeling behavior that helps SHOW your child what is expected of them is always a winning way to help your child.  Volunteering with children or adults that have special needs is a great way to show your child how to help others, it will teach them empathy.

Your Beautiful Child #2

Aloha!
Sensory Integration. What is it?  Sensory Integration occurs in the central nervous system.  It is when the Brain constantly focuses on information regarding the 5 senses.  It can stop any other information from coming in or going out.  There are two extra senses that are involved, Movement and banance and proprioceptive, body positioning.
Three types of sensory disorders:
Sensory Avoid-er – Most common, The brain is unable to effectively reduce sensations
Sensory Seeker – Craves excessive stimulation from one or more sensory systems
Sensor under responder – Child does not notice or responds slowly to sensory inputs

Children work with Occupational Therapists to better perform tasks that occupy time such as: attention span, sensory processing, active daily living, visual perception and handwriting, just to name a few.

Using the Bonding Basket to not only bond with your child, but to calm them is a great way to help children with a sensory processing disorder.www.bondingbasket.ecrater.com

The subject for the show today was,
The importance of listening and communicating with your child.

Shane will focus on the most important topic of all, communication.  This is the basic way to get in tune with your child, typical children definitely, but extra important to children with Autism and Autism spectrum disorders.  She will answer emailed questions regarding echolalia, and several ways to help a child away from echoing and scripting
